Village News
The islands in Ocean Country have been celebrating the arrival of the next Umikage, Saizo. The long bridge leading to SHIPPUUGAKURE NO SATO has been closed for outsiders because they wish to celebrate this moment with Ocean Country natives only.
As usual, the Storm Country has been hosting the Asgard Games to welcome their Kanetsukage, Cornelia. It's a double special occasion because Cornelia is also the first female Kanetsukage. She has been picked for her courage, loyalty and outstanding power by the BOUFUUGAKURE NO SATO elders.
Not only that, but the Cherry Blossom Country has become relieved as well. It seems that everyone is slowly picking up after the war now. KUSAMURAGAKURE NO SATO proudly presented their new Sakurakage, Altair.
TSUKIGAKURE NO SATO is still thriving on the merchants coming in and out. They have not experienced anything special lately. Their wealth has remained the same as they were not forced to invest into shinobi unlike the others.
On the cold isles of the Blizzard Country, HYOUGAGAKURE NO SATO has still refused to create a free traveling policy. Some habits never change. To protect their traditions, they have even warned outsiders to not interfere with their matters.
Now that everyone is picking up again, who will come out on top?

Thaddeus Roth Tellme11

Personality: Thaddeus is a rather composed individual, brought up to be a gentleman and represent the next generation of the Roth family with honor and dignity. That being said he is still a teenager, and nothing represents this more than his appetite for adventure and knowledge. He wants to experience just about everything he can, keeping an open mind for what the world has to offer. For as long as his parent’s can remember Thaddeus has always had an increased aptitude for learning and adapting, with a knack for remembering and reliving just about every detail of his experiences within his mind. He was also quite adept at fitting in, seemingly able to change his personality to better mix with those around him. It’s not that he lacks emotion and therefore can mimic whatever’s necessary in order to fit in, but that he has so much control over them he can alter or suppress what he already feels, which is ideal for going undercover whatever the situation. He’s just at home in the shadows as he is the light and has no moral issue crossing the line between them if the situation called for it. While he is heterosexual Thaddeus isn’t one to oggle, or bat an eye at the female figure for that matter. Sure he appreciates beauty, as long as they have an air of class or at least decency, but it has no weighing on how much he’s attracted to them. Above anything else in a woman he’s attracted to wisdom, personality, and skill.

Thaddeus is and will always be loyal to his country, but not blindly so. He isn’t afraid to question orders if they seem illogical, or even disobey them if the situation demanded it. Thaddeus is willing to do whatever’s necessary for the benefit of his country, as long as there truly was no other option. Good and evil, light and dark, right and wrong are all relative to him. He knows that what one person may consider as evil another may consider as good and so on, in the end there is only interpretation and necessity. That being said Thaddeus still has a sense of what he believes to be right or wrong, but it is far more open to justifiable necessity than what others would make of any given situation. He is more sympathetic, or at least understanding, when judgement is to be passed upon criminals or enemies that act on starvation or for the good of their country, or similar reasons, compared to those who act solely on their own greed or bloodlust. However Thaddeus’s form of sympathy and understanding may be a little different than others and are not to be confused with leniency. Even those who commit crime out of necessity are still committing crime and deserve punishment, but that doesn’t mean said punishment can’t be carried out honorably and with respect to the criminal, and for Thaddeus this goes doubly for enemies acting for the good of their own country and people.

Thaddeus’s approach to combat is quite cautious. He prefers to learn everything he can about his enemy, testing for strengths and weaknesses before exploiting them. If none are found he would try to make his own openings, for him this is done most commonly through proper use of Genjutsu mixed with a little medical knowhow. Once an exploitable opening appears Thaddeus makes use of his skill in fencing, utilizing quick and precise strikes to attack vital points on the human body, another thing medical knowledge helps with. Even though he’s technically a medical-nin Thaddeus rarely adheres to the standardized rules that govern them, mainly the first “No medic ninja shall ever stop medical treatment until the lives of their party members have come to an end.” and second ”No medical-nin shall ever stand on the front lines.” clauses. He views the first clause as contradictory involving situations where offensive action may save more lives than healing, and the second as somewhat redundant because of the aforementioned reason.

Likes: Having a boundless curiosity Thaddeus has experienced quite a few things that he has wound up enjoying, some of his favorites revolving around the ocean and the various activities one can do on, in, and around it. Sailing is near, if not on the top of the list in this category, especially on the wake of a storm. One could say it’s in his blood since most members of his mother's family are or have been prominent sailors. He also enjoys swimming in the reefs and underwater fishing, mainly with a harpoon. Ocean aside Thaddeus enjoys fencing and classical music, preferably string instruments and the piano. He even knows how to play the latter fairly well and is quite good with a violin. As far as food is concerned Thaddeus likes most meats, but prefers red meats since he’s had more than his fair share of fish. He also likes most tropical fruits, primarily the bitter ones. Where people are concerned Thaddeus enjoys the company of the open minded, even more so if they’re well mannered or have similar goals to his own.

Dislikes: Growing up and living practically all of his life in a tropical climate Thaddeus hates anything remotely near freezing temperatures, usually reducing his tolerance for annoying people or situations by a substantial amount. He also dislikes extremely arid climates, but he’s much more tolerable of them. Thaddeus isn’t a fan of alcohol, apart from its medical uses that is. He doesn’t care that people drink it and has nothing against its existence but Thaddeus never wants to blur his thoughts with its intoxicating effects, preferring to keep a clear mind at all times just incase something were to happen. He also dislikes it when people drink while they’re on duty. As far as food goes that of the overly spicy or extremely sweet sort will usually warrant a negative reaction from Thaddeus, but in most situations it wouldn’t be a large one, seeing as it would go against how he was raised. He also dislikes individuals without at least some form of honor regarding those of lesser status or different races/genders/ect. Womanizers, bullies, and thugs would fall under this category. Depending on the situation he may go out of his way to intervene, at least when the victim is completely helpless.

Motivation: In short Thaddeus seeks knowledge. He believes that through knowledge one gains skill, power, and wisdom allowing that person to more effectively control their own fate. If it also aids him in defending his country and its people then that’s a bonus. Thaddeus search for knowledge isn’t only limited to what most think of as knowledge. He considers just about everything no matter how brutish, simple, or outdated to be knowledge. He wants to understand the world and how it works, see things in person rather than read them from a book, especially that which some would consider forbidden.

Fears: Fear usually isn’t usually something associated with Thaddeus, but that doesn’t mean he is utterly fearless. He fears losing the ability to think rationally, whether it be through Genjutsu, injury, or other means. He also fears being completely helpless. Thaddeus can’t stand it when there’s no option for him to take, even if his reaction would have been not to take said option in the first place. As with most people he doesn't wish to lose loved ones or comrades, but that would barely be classified as a fear for Thaddeus. He knows that people die whether you want them to or not, and as a Shinobi early death is more of an eventuality than a possibility. A more base fear of his is being dragged into the depths by some form of overwhelming and inescapable force, where he is incapable of influencing his own fate and utterly helpless as the end encroaches.

Thaddeus Roth Blood10

The Roth Family

Bloodline Name: N/A

Bloodline Ability: N/A

Location: Primarily Shippuugakure, but distant family members can be found just about anywhere with a large port.

Clan History: The Roth Family’s known history stretches back generations, however there isn't much of note beyond their arrival in Hurricane Country. They first came to Shippuugakure from a land across the seas; leading a veritable armada of mercenary, mercantile, and fishing vessels in the wake of the 10 year hurricane. Their stay in Shippuugakure was originally intended to be temporary as they searched for an uninhabited island to call their own. In return for a place to lay anchor and trade they offered their vessels and their crews for whatever services the town was in need of and more, many of them volunteering to aid in the building of Ao Phalanx Harbor. Of course the building of a proper harbor brought in even more work for them through trade and fishing, which in turn brought forth various bands of rogues and pirates on the high seas, granting those members who preferred blade over net much needed work. It wasn’t long before some members of the Roth family and their shipmates decided to make Shippuugakure their permanent harbor, while others went on to settle in numerous other smaller towns within the Land of Hurricanes and beyond.

Not much not note has happened since then. Those that stayed in Shippuugakure made a name for themselves as sailors and pirate hunters, eventually opening their own, although small, district within Ao Phalanx Harbor. As the years passed they grew in wealth and fame amongst those whose work brought them to the docks or took them to the high seas, but even as their status increased they never thought of themselves above any other. However unlike many of the more notable clans in Shippuugakure, or in just about any hidden village for that matter, the Roth family rarely produced shinobi. While the majority of their members train extensively in various combat techniques they prefer to live their lives on the seas, those who would make fine shinobi becoming hired protection for mercantile vessels or pirate hunters. As a result the other clans tend to look down on them, even if they do aid the country by trying to keep the waters safe.

Thaddeus Roth Histor11

History: Thaddeus is the first child of Elizabeth and Kaito Roth, both fairly prominent members of the Roth family within Shippuugakure. Elizabeth being the third daughter and middle child of the city’s family head, and dockmaster, with Kaito being a respected doctor who took the family name when he married Elizabeth. While he was born into wealth Thaddeus’s childhood wasn’t exactly what you would call being “pampered in the lap of luxury”. He was raised with the belief that money wasn’t important, that one should always be charitable and help those in need, that one should respect everyone the same no matter their wealth or upbringing, and that one should always “earn their keep” through proper and honorable work. Thaddeus took these lessons to heart as he grew up, although he would later learn to see some things a little differently. Despite their wealth his parents never used hired help, so as a child Thaddeus always cleaned up after himself and aided his parents with whatever chores he could. By the time he was four his mother started to introduce him to the finer points of their families lifestyle, however his father made her promise not to take him out to sea until he was older. Thaddeus spent quite a bit of his youth out on the docks of the Roth shipyard with his mother learning the day to day basics of maintaining a shipping company, as well as spending quite a bit of time with his aunts, uncles, and cousins learning about their various trades within the shipyard while his father was off working.

Not to be “outdone” by his wife Kaito spent as much time as he could with Thaddeus, exposing him to the various cultures and activities within the city. It was with his father that Thaddeus discovered his liking for classical music and instruments, the piano and the violin above others. It was also with his father when his ability to learn and remember with speed and detail began to show, although Thaddeus himself was unaware of this at first. It was Kaito that first noticed his growing aptitude, well, more like he was struck over the head with it when Thaddeus played back a little worse for wear but very accurate verse from the concert they had seen a few weeks earlier on the violin he bought Thaddeus for his 6th birthday. Of course Elizabeth was quite surprised as well, but she was unaware that Thaddeus hadn’t been taking lessons while he was out with Kaito. Needless to say they were astonished, but they were also worried for his health. Kaito had seen gifted children like this before, but in most case he wound up diagnosing them with mental disorders and were incapable of living their lives without assistance of some sort. Up until then Thaddeus hadn’t shown any signs of mental disability so there was no reason to jump the gun just yet, but Kaito was going to keep a close eye on him should any rear their head.

In the mean time life for Thaddeus went on like normal, at least from his point of view. Although he was a little confused as to why people were so surprised when he showed them how much he learned simply by observing their work once or twice. It wasn't until he started school that Thaddeus really noticed his gift as he sailed through the years curriculum in less than a week, leaving the first year teachers in a state of shock and awe, yet to him it all seemed too easy. With the consent and aid of his parents Thaddeus opted to bypass traditional schooling and simply be homeschooled. Kaito certainly had the library and the resources to provide his academic materials, and Elizabeth had the time to help him whenever he needed, not to mention throw in a few lessons regarding more dangerous material behind Kaito's back. While both parents wanted Thaddeus to do whatever made him happy they also secretly wanted him to follow in their footsteps, which started a sort of competition between the two of them when it came to his education. Like anyone who would truly consider themselves a Roth Elizabeth began teaching Thaddeus the finer points of sailing by taking him into the harbor and down Onozuka River in between the storms that regularly battered Shippuugakure, while Kaito preferred to set Thaddeus’s sights towards the academic. He also started to teach Thaddeus about the human body and how it reacts to some medicines and herbs, leaving the more graphic details for when he was a little older.

A little after his 7th birthday his mother decided it was time to introduce Thaddeus to another part of the Roth family traditions, the combat aptitude test. Seeing as many of the family’s members specialized, or at least minored, in some form of physical combat to defend themselves and/or others from pirates they developed a system for assessing a child's potential and acclimating the next generation to combat on the open seas. Of course Kaito had no knowledge of this at the time. The most common weapons were the cutlass and the rapier but they had practice versions of just about every weapon available so their kids could find whatever suited them best, as well as broaden their training should they wind up in a situation where they can't use their favored weapon. Traditionally all members of the current main branch of the family had at least one combat specialization they were skilled enough in to be able to teach those of the next generation, Elizabeth herself specialized in kenjutsu, or more specifically the use of rapiers and the art of fencing. She wasn't quite a master of the art, but she was skilled enough teach other family members who wanted to train in the art. Her father, the clan's head, was a master of bojutsu; her eldest sister, and oldest sibling, an expert of kyujutsu; her elder brother an expert of knife combat and taijutsu, but also well versed in most of the other arts; her younger sister following in their father's footsteps; and her younger brother, the youngest sibling, specializing in small arms and thrown weapons, or shurikenjutsu. Most members of the secondary branches also specialized in some form of combat as well, so there was no shortage of potential sparring partners or tutors for Thaddeus.

It felt odd to Thaddeus to see his family in this light, some of the nicest and most peaceful people he knew all well versed in arts of combat and bloodshed. It's not that he didn't approve, he could certainly see the necessity of it, but it was still an image he'd have to get used to. Just as any other skill first came the basics, the different types of weapons and how to hold them. Blunt weaponry, such as the mace and warhammer, designed to deal devastating impact damage and render heavy armor and shields useless with the drawback of heavier weight and slower swing speeds. Bladed weaponry, such as daggers and swords, designed to cut and/or pierce with an advantage in speed but lacking the weight behind it to crush heavy armor. Long range weaponry, such as the bow and throwing knife, excellent for taking down an enemy by surprise and without endangering yourself but with the drawbacks of reduced efficiency in close range combat and reliance on ammunition. Then lastly pole based weaponry, such as the staff and spear, great for keeping an enemy at bay with the increased reach but at a disadvantage in tight spaces. One by one Thaddeus observed and mimicked the proper stances and hand placement for each weapon alongside a handful of his cousins that were around the same age as him, following the instructions of his uncle Sigmund; his mother's elder brother.

Sigmund then went on to explain the advantages, disadvantages, and practical uses of each type of weapon out on the sea. Despite their varied arsenal many Roths found swords and daggers to be easier to wield and fight with than most other weapons out on the sea, whether it was in their blood or actually easier no one really knew, although it did seem that way for Thaddeus. Just like his mother did when she was a kid he found himself drawn to the feel of light blades, and he wasn't alone. In fact most of his cousins were enjoying themselves as they practiced a few basic swings with their training swords, however it would be quite some time before they would get to train with a real one. Elizabeth was ecstatic, her son took a liking to the same weapon she did when she was his age, she would be able to personally train him just about every step of the way rather than having to sit back and watch as one of her siblings or cousins did so. Thaddeus was also happy that he would be able to train under his own mother, although that was partially because he would be able to learn faster seeing as he lived with his trainer.

Over the next year she taught him the basics of footwork, positioning, offense, and defense; starting on dry land before moving to the deck of a docked ship and then out onto the waters of Ao Phalanx Harbor. In the mean time Kaito continued to teach Thaddeus the basics of medical care and survival, such as how to treat broken limbs without basic supplies and what to do if poisoned by the various plants and animals one might encounter in the region, any situation he could think of that might happen to Thaddeus out on the seas. Whether he liked it or not his son would probably end up following in his mother's footsteps, which normally would be fine but the Roth lifestyle wasn't exactly the safest, so he wanted Thaddeus to be prepared should he encounter difficulties in the future. With her son's training advancing smoothly Elizabeth decided it was time for Thaddeus to learn some of the finer points of swordplay, which is where her expertise in fencing began to show itself, forcing Thaddeus to hasten his reaction speed and focus on precise parries and thrusts rather than simply blocking and countering by steadily ramping up the speed and ferocity of their training sessions. It took him a little while to get used to the increased speed at first, but a few months after his 9th birthday Thaddeus was able to keep up with his mother's more energetic sparring sessions on the shifting deck of a ship anchored in the open waters of Ao Phalanx Harbor, although he had yet to experience combat on the tumultuous seas beyond the Onozuka River. Elizabeth wasn't quite ready to take Thaddeus out into open waters yet.

Before he could join her on the open sea Elizabeth wanted Thaddeus to be ready for anything, the chances of a pirate attack so close to Shippuugakure were slim but not impossible. Now that Thaddeus knew how to fight one on one with another fencer it was time for him to learn how to fight against everyone else. Normally this would be done over the course of years with other children around his age, but Thaddeus didn't exactly learn at the same pace as the other children, so Elizabeth "conscripted" her siblings in order to keep Thaddeus's training moving at a rate he enjoyed. It took him a while to get used to fighting different weapons after only sparring against his mother for so long, but once his feet hit the ground he took off running, so to speak. Thaddeus's rate of adaptation was astounding, taking his aunts and uncles by surprise, even Elizabeth was taken aback and she had been training him for nearly 3 years. By his 10th birthday Thaddeus was ready for the dangers of the open seas, and with that privilege came his first real weapon, or pair of weapons I should say. His mother had a rapier forged for him designed for his smaller size and his uncle Sigmund threw in one of his combat daggers, telling him that a boy of his talent shouldn't waste his potential wielding only one weapon. Kaito also had a special gift saved for the occasion. He had been working on amassing a collection of medical, historical, scientific, and classic fictional books for a few years now. Kaito was going to save some of the more detailed stuff for when he was older but he figured if Thaddeus was old enough to wield a deadly weapon then he was old enough to learn about the more intricate details of the human body.

Thaddeus spent the next 3 years split between his books and his mothers side, helping her with everything from the clerical work of her shipping company to sailing with her on special deliveries. During these 3 years he continued his training incorporating the knife Sigmund gave him into his style, which he had to use in a total of four pirate attacks where he regrettably took the lives of 7 men, 2 women, and a trained sea otter. It was during this time period he began to see the necessity of bloodshed and the "not so thin" line between right and wrong, but he had yet to even think about becoming a shinobi. It wasn't until a few months after his 13th birthday that Thaddeus saw the shinobi lifestyle first hand when a band of pirates bought off a merchant to smuggle them into the city's market area, where they waited until nightfall to begin their looting. Thaddeus and Elizabeth were on their way home after arriving late to port, unaware of the danger they walked right into an ambush. While they put up a good fight the pirates had the advantage of surprise and numbers and quickly overwhelmed them, knocking them out and taking them back to the vessel they paid off in order to hold them for ransom at a later time, after all the Roth Patron's daughter and grandson should fetch a hefty price no? The next thing on the list was to pack up everything they could steal and sail out to their headquarters.

Of course as with most plans things don't exactly go as you want. Their first mistake was choosing Shippugakure as their target, raiding one of the 5 great hidden villages was never a good idea. Thaddeus and his mother spent no more than 20 conscious minutes locked in the hold of the pirate's ship before the sound of conflict gave them an opening to escape their bindings and prepare to attack from within, although it wasn't really necessary seeing as the fighting was over just as quick as it started. The next person to walk through the door of their makeshift cell was a Shippugakure kunoichi, who seemed to be a little surprised that the two of them were ready to take down the next pirate that came through the door, at least until she recognized Elizabeth. The carnage they passed on their way off the boat was Thaddeus's first look at the prowess and importance of a shinobi, and set in motion the events that led to him becoming one himself. Turned out the kunoichi that came to their rescue was a childhood friend of his mothers and after that pirate fiasco they got reaquainted with each other. She was the one who gave him the idea to see how it was like for himself by enrolling in the academy, although jokingly at first. Roth usually weren't ones to be involved with the military outside of supplying goods or protecting the seas and waterways.

Nevertheless Thaddeus saw it as an opportunity to experience more in life while simultaneously aiding the people of Hurricane Country, and if he didn't like it he could simply go back to working with his family. So, much to the surprise of the majority of his family, Thaddeus enrolled in Shippuugakure's Shinobi Academy the following year. While a 14 year old boy was an odd addition to first year students it didn't take him long to skip ahead to classes with those more his age; after all the agility, balance, knowledge, and martial skills he learned from his parents combined with his cognition made short work of just about everything covered in the academy. Only the process of chakra manipulation was new to him which, much like adapting to fighting different weapon styles, took him a little bit to get used to at first before taking off with flying colors. While he was one of the few in his class that understood and could use basic medical ninjutsu Thaddeus's real focus was genjutsu, he was absolutely fascinated by the ability to manipulate someone's brain with a nigh endless variety of illusions, although he found most visual ones to be rather overkill. Despite lacking any ninjutsu beyond the basics Thaddeus graduated with honors shortly before his 15th birthday, and after a special graduation party thrown by his parents began his career as a shinobi.

Thaddeus spent 2 years as a genin learning the ins and outs of shinobi teamwork, where being raised a Roth proved invaluable in a country dominated by water. He began to develop his own style of genjutsu influenced by his medical knowledge, although his actual training with medical ninjutsu suffered for it. As the Chuunin Exams approached and his team began to face more difficult missions Thaddeus found his role in the group shifting from support to combat strategist, often forgoing the rules of medical shinobi and taking up arms himself. Eventually the time came for them to take the exam. The information gathering and teamwork events were a cinch, but things got a tad bit more difficult when they were split apart for the individual combat exam. His teammates were each defeated in their second round of combat but Thaddeus went on to make it to the final four, where he feigned a forfeit in order to catch his opponent off guard. While most of the judges liked his strategy of feigning defeat he was still disqualified due to the forfeit. In the end Thaddeus was the only one in his team to get promoted to Chuunin after the exams, and with that promotion came reassignment. After a friendly farewell Thaddeus and his teammates went their separate ways and he started his duties as a Shippuugakure Chuunin.

The distant song of seabirds basking in the sunlight could be heard over the roar of the surf as a small fishing vessel navigated the sea stacks just beyond Shipwreck Cove. Turbulent seas and a steadily increasing breeze marked the imminent arrival of yet another storm, or one could simply look to the horizon and see the approaching wall of clouds in the distance, but that would be cheating no? "This is as far as I can take ya Thaddy me boy, I'm sure ya understand why." Said a peg legged elderly man at the helm of the vessel as he motioned for his crew to drop anchor. "No worries Lucky, I wouldn't want to risk your crew." Replied his young counterpart, patting the veteran sea captain on the shoulder. "I'll try to be back before the storm hits." Thaddeus assured the old man before grabbing a short coil of rope, squeezing his head and left arm through it as he moved towards the ship's railing. "Do be careful laddy, yer mum would have my head if anything happened to ya." "I'm sure she'd have mine too." With a smile Thaddeus disappeared overboard; armed with nothing but a pair of shorts tied tightly around the waist and above the knees, a combat knife strapped to his right bicep, and the coil of rope borrowed from Lucky.

Only a faint splash was audible over the rough surf as Thaddeus dove into the sea, his destination the underwater ruins of a smuggling vessel just inside the boundary of Shipwreck Cove. Rumor has it this ship, so aptly named Drunken Walrus, sank after crashing into a sea stack during a storm a few months back with the helmsman drunk at the wheel. In most cases this would be considered a good thing, one less smuggler on the waters to bring illegal or stolen goods into the country, however if one was to believe the rumors the crew of the Drunken Walrus managed to get their hands on some sensitive cargo from a neighboring country. The exact nature or origin of this cargo was unknown. Hell, they weren't even sure this cargo existed, but the source of these rumors was apparently trustworthy enough for Thaddeus's superiors to send him on a treasure hunting mission under some of the most dangerous waters near Shippuugakure. Not that Thaddeus minded, he was a Roth after all, the sea was second nature to him. Besides if this cargo was still in good shape it could potentially serve as an excellent source of intelligence, or even an olive branch to maintain peace between Hurricane Country and whatever it's home country may be, or both for that matter.

Orders aside Thaddeus would hate to miss a chance to explore the underwater ruins of a wrecked ship, you never know what one might find at the bottom of the sea. Of course there was also witnessing the beauty that the ocean had to offer, so even if the wreck turned out to be empty the journey wouldn't be a complete waste. Propelling himself through the water with the same technique used to walk along its surface Thaddeus scanned the seafloor around the sea stacks that marked the ocean border of Shipwreck Cove, staying at least ten to fifteen feet below the surface in order to avoid the rough surf above. Countless species of reef fish carried about their daily lives in a way that appeared like an endless intricate and colorful dance of life and death, paying little to no heed to the young man swimming with them. Visibility was ideal, but with the encroaching storm it would fade rapidly, time was of the essence. There were many time worn wrecks in these waters, but only one that seemed recent enough to be the Drunken Walrus, and only one with a mostly intact walrus figurehead for that matter. With his target in sight Thaddeus returned to the surface in order to refresh his oxygen supply and mentally plot his course from and back to Lucky's ship, disappearing beneath the surface once more after taking a few deep breaths.
